Between the borders of Schleswig
Southwest of Aabenraa lies the small village of Rens, just a few kilometers from the Danish-German border, where you will find the museum “Between the Borders of Schleswig.”
The exhibition focuses entirely on the complicated history of the borderland. For example, you can see an exhibition about the South German settlers, the so-called "Potato Germans," who were recruited in the 18th century specifically to cultivate the heath and marshlands in Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig.
The museum also features an exhibition about the history of the gendarmerie – the "blue gendarmes" who patrolled along what we now know as the Gendarme Path, and which existed from 1838 to 1952.
The museum “Between the Borders of Schleswig” tells the exciting story of the area between the Kongeå and the Eider from the Stone Age to World War II, using a combination of panels, props, original uniforms, and relics.
In the museum’s small café, you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee, tea, cold drinks, and homemade cake.
During the summer months, there are tables and benches outside where you can enjoy your packed lunch.
