Experience Nature!

Sønderjylland does not have a patent on the forest, the beach or the countryside in general – all of these are of course also found elsewhere in Denmark. Nevertheless, the countryside in Sønderjylland does set itself apart. Perhaps it’s the variation that’s the key, as there are only a few other places where you’ll find such a variety of nature experiences – from the Wadden Sea and the flat marsh landscape in the west to the fjord landscape with its tunnel valleys and hilly landscapes in the east.

Experiences in the Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea offers a wealth of great experiences all year round, with plenty to interest adults and children alike. Whatever time of year you visit the Wadden Sea, you’ll encounter rich birdlife. If you’re in the region in either spring or autumn, then make sure you don’t miss out on the magnificent phenomenon known as Sort Sol, where thousands of starlings weave spectacular patterns over the marsh as they settle down for the night.

The Wadden Sea is one of the world’s largest tidal areas. It consists of islands, tidal canals, watercourses, mudflats and a coastline which is constantly changing shape and even position. It contains a huge diversity of flora and fauna and is one of the world’s most productive ecosystems. As a result, it was admitted onto UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2014.

The Wadden Sea is a wild and untamed natural area. Whether plant or animal, species in the area must be prepared to survive the extremely changeable conditions. Life can be challenging, and every plant and animal has adapted to the unique conditions. Take a look at the article “The Battle Against the Water”, if you’re interested in how the local population has learnt to co-exist with the sea down through the ages by means of the use of dikes, sluices and pumping stations.

Active in the countryside

The countryside in Sønderjylland is beautiful to look at, but it also contains a large number of fun and challenging experiences for both adults and children.
Go on a picnic, for example, and enjoy the lovely surroundings, the view and perhaps even a forest playground in the vicinity?

The countryside also has a great variety of things to do if you’re looking to enjoy an active holiday. Bring your bike or pack your hiking boots in your bag; you’ll find fantastic cycling and hiking routes in Sønderjylland. You can also head up into the treetops on a ropes course or race along the beach on a blokart. If all this exercise and excitement leaves you breathless, it’s good to know that you can also enjoy a day of relaxation on one of the many Blue Flag beaches on both the east coast and the west coast.
